1. What does it mean with SWMA?

SWMA is an abbreviation to Selangor Waters management Authority, an agency under Selangor state government that is responsible to maintain and conserve water resources, river basin, coastal waters and their environment.

2. What is the function of SWMA?

SWMA is strengthened with legislation and enforcement powers based on Selangor Waters Management Authority Enactment 1999 with its 17 main functions. Based on SWMA Enactment 1999, the functions can be summarized as follows :-

    1. To coordinate relationship and cooperation of a diverse of agencies domestic;
    2. To adopt and implement policies, plan and government project;
    3. To take care of the State's interest in water resources matters;
    4. To regulate through licensing of any activity related with water resources;
    5. To regulate through enforcement ;

3. What is the difference between SWMA and SYABAS?

SWMA is State Government statutory body established under SWMA Enactment 1999 which manages water resources such as river, lake and coastal waters in Selangor State while Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn. Bhd. (SYABAS) is a private company given concession by the government to manage distribution of treated water supply to consumers in Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.

4. What is SWMA principal activity?

Principal activities undertaken by SWMA is:-

    1. Licensing and charging of water resources abstraction.
    2. Written permission for resource alteration activity.
    3. Licensing for discharge or emmission of pollutant.
    4. Licensing for inland waterway navigation
    5. Licensing of water diversion for generating electricity.

5. What does it mean with Integrated Water Resources Management Plan?

Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) is a process which promotes coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, in order maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability if vital ecosystems.

6. What does it mean with Integrated River Basin Management Plan ?

Integrated River Basin Management is an approach to water resource management that takes into account all the factors linked to the resources, including social and economic activities. It is very broad in scope to not only cover water, but also environmental management aspects such as land use issues, pollution control, development pressures and biodiversity conservation.

7. What does it mean with Integrated Coastal Management Plan ?

Integrated Coastal Management in short, is defined as a natural resource and environmental management system which employs an integrative, holistic approach and an interactive planning process in addressing the complex management issues in the coastal area.
